The four published allowances, reconciled

Published guides give different per-person allowances for bench width, and they don't agree. Swyft Home sets a hard floor of 60 cm per person and tells you to divide bench length by 60 to get capacity. Nismaaya Decor says 20 to 24 inches, which is 51 to 61 cm. Loomlan says 18 to 24 inches, dropping to 16 to 18 inches when you're squeezing people in.

Convert them and the gap is obvious. Loomlan's bottom end, 18 inches, is 46 cm. That is looser at its bottom end than the 60 cm figure Swyft publishes as a minimum, and the squeeze number of 16 inches is lower still. So a bench that seats four by one rule seats three by another, and no source explains the discrepancy.

Which figure should you use? No source distinguishes between clothing layers, and none gives a per-person figure for children — the 20-24 inch and 60 cm rules are stated for adults only. And for overflow — one extra person, one meal a year — 18 inches works, though no source quantifies the comfort cost.

Note what the table doesn't show: any allowance for legs. That's set by the table's leg style, not the bench.

Why two capacity charts give the same bench different answers

Take a 60-inch bench and ask three published guides how many people it seats. You get three answers: three, four to five, and two to three.

Nismaaya Decor's length chart puts 60 to 72 inches at three people. Loomlan's pairing chart says a 72-inch table wants a 60 to 66-inch bench for four to five people. And Nismaaya's own second table credits a 48 to 60-inch bench under a six-person table with just two to three. So a 60-inch bench is credited with two to three, three, or four to five depending on which page you open.

No source explains the discrepancy, and none states whether its figure counts people on the bench, people at the table, or people seated comfortably. The evidence simply does not settle it.

Where the bench actually buys you a person

LOOMLAN says benches seat 20-30% more people than chairs in the same linear space, with less individual space per person as the trade-off. No source tests where along a bench's length that advantage actually converts into a whole extra seat, or quantifies the width recovered from armrests and gaps between chair backs.

No source gives a per-chair width figure, an adult's shoulder or hip width, or a threshold at which elbows collide, so the crossover lengths cannot be worked out from the published guidance.

Five conditions that quietly cost you a seat

Every capacity chart assumes an open bench, a clear table base and a room with space on all four sides. Break any one of those and the arithmetic stops working. Five conditions can cost you a seat or a clearance, though no source quantifies the loss.

• Bench pushed against a wall. Nismaaya Decor notes that the wall saves you the clearance behind the seat, but everyone then enters from the ends. Swyft is blunter: the walled-in bench gets annoying, because one person leaving means everyone standing. Loomlan says benches blocked at both ends make the interior seats genuinely hard to reach. No source quantifies how much stated capacity this costs.
• Bench with a back. Loomlan's guide says a back is more comfortable for extended sitting but needs more space and limits where the bench can go. No source states that a back prevents entry from the ends.

Do the arithmetic once. A 72-inch table, chairs on all four sides: two per long side, one at each head. That's six seats, Now swap the sides for benches. Nismaaya Decor calls 60 to 68 inches ideal for a 72-inch table; Loewen Design Studios prefers 12 inches shorter than the table, so 60. Either way you have two benches of roughly 60 inches.

Nismaaya says a 60- to 72-inch bench can take three, which would give six bench seats plus two heads; its other chart credits a 48- to 60-inch bench with only two to three. No source states what proportion of benches on the market are rated for two versus three.

No product specifications in the evidence file support a comparison of specific benches here; LOOMLAN says only that quality benches support 300-500+ pounds, and notes that no weight capacity per seat or linear foot is published.

One more thing the chair configuration wins on: heads. No source addresses whether a bench can be used at the end of a table. Check your chair pull-out clearance before you assume they fit.

Already bought a bench that's too short?

Three fixes, and each one costs you something.

The first: bench on one side, one chair squeezed at the corner. The cost is walkway: LOOMLAN's clearance set wants 36 to 42 inches for traffic around an occupied bench, though no source gives a pull-out figure for a chair added at the corner, or clearance figures for a bench on one side of a table and chairs on the other.

The second: backless stools at the table ends. LOOMLAN is blunt that backless seating gives less support for extended sitting.

The third is the honest one. Accept 18 inches each for a short meal. LOOMLAN drops to 16–18 inches per person for squeezed-in guests, though no source states how long that allowance remains tolerable.
