Dining Chandelier Size: Two Formulas, 12in Apart

The two formulas disagree, and here's the number that settles it

A 13 x 15 ft room and a 48-inch round table sitting in the middle of it. Add the room's length and width, read the total as inches, and you get 28. Run the table formula instead and you get 24 to 32. Those two answers overlap, barely, and that overlap is where most people pick wrong. When the room number and the table number disagree on dining chandelier size, Seus Lighting says to take the smaller one — though no other source in this set endorses that tie-breaker.

That's the tie-breaker, and it's worth stating plainly because almost nobody publishes it. Seus Lighting does: a 30-inch fixture may suit a 13 x 15 ft room and still overwhelm a 48-inch table standing under it.

So this piece is for anyone standing in a dining room with a tape measure and two contradictory numbers on their phone. The published rules genuinely disagree with each other — by four inches on a 48-inch table — and I'll show you where and by how much, then how to decide. If you're also sizing the rug or the sideboard against that table, the pull-out distance of your chairs sets the rug, and that's a separate calculation.

One caveat on "take the smaller number". Seus Lighting also calls going too small the single most common sizing mistake, because an undersized fixture vanishes and under-lights the table. Smaller of the two published results. Not smaller than both.

Same table, four published rules, four different answers

Take a 48-inch round table and ask four lighting manufacturers what fixture belongs above it. Seus Lighting says 24 to 32 inches. Maxim Lighting, working from half to three quarters of the width, says 24 to 36 — the same range it gives for a 48" x 60" table. Visual Comfort gives half to two thirds, which lands back at 24 to 32. MOD Lighting uses the same half-to-two-thirds arithmetic, so a 36-inch nook takes 18 to 27 inches.

The bottom of every range agrees. The top does not.

Here's the spread on three common sizes, and it widens as the table grows:

  • 48in table: 24–32in under the two-thirds rule (Seus Lighting), versus 24–36in under three quarters (Maxim Lighting). A 4in gap.

Four inches is not a rounding error. On a 48-inch table it's the difference between a fixture that sits inside the tabletop's visual footprint and one that overhangs the edge where somebody's head goes.

Linear fixtures scramble the numbers again. Kichler puts a linear chandelier at one third to one half of the table's length, while Seus allows a 48-inch table a linear form up to 36 inches. Both are defensible. They are not the same instruction.

What the spread means in practice: the top of the range is where a fixture starts reading as oversized, and the manufacturers disagree about where that line falls. Undersize looks like an afterthought. Oversize looks like it belongs to a bigger room.

So the honest answer for a 48-inch table isn't 32 inches or 36 inches. It's the narrower 24-to-32 range in a tighter room with a lower ceiling, and up to 36 if you have the height and the width to carry it. The dining rug size set by your chair pull-out works the same way — the published number is a starting point, not a verdict.

Minimum or ideal? Kichler and Visual Comfort mean different things by the same arithmetic

Take a 12 x 14 foot dining room. Add the two figures, read the total as inches, and you get 26. Kichler publishes that number as a minimum diameter — the smallest fixture that won't look undersized. Visual Comfort publishes the same arithmetic and calls the result the ideal diameter. Same room, same sum, two entirely different instructions.

That distinction is worth more than it sounds. If 26 inches is a floor, then a 30-inch or 32-inch fixture is still in bounds and probably better. If 26 inches is the target, a 32-inch fixture is oversized and you've overshot by six. Several of the pages I checked reproduce the formula, and Kichler and Visual Comfort are the two that state which reading they've adopted.

Dining Chandelier Size: Two Formulas, 12in Apart

So pick your reading before you pick a fixture. I'd treat it as a minimum in taller rooms and as a target in lower ones — which is roughly what Visual Comfort implies when it says lower ceilings may call for something slightly smaller than the width-plus-length sum, and vaulted ceilings for a larger diameter or a more vertical form. Maxim's own calculator, for reference, assumes a 30-inch table height, a 40-inch table width and an 8-foot ceiling. Its output is anchored to those defaults, not to your room.

Then there's the case where the formula produces a number that means nothing at all.

Seus Lighting sets a separate limit for linear fixtures that comes from the table rather than the room: 12 inches of clearance to the tabletop edge on each side, a 24-inch total buffer. For a 96-inch table that caps a linear fixture at about 72 inches, per Seus Lighting.

Narrow it down

  • ORANOOR, not for you if this matters: integrated LED strip cannot be re-lamped when it fails.
  • Lynnoland 25"-61", not for you if this matters: bulbs are not included, and six of them are needed before it lights at all.
  • CRYSTOP, not for you if this matters: 8in diameter is far too small to balance any full-size dining table.

Four adjustments the calculators leave out

The formulas assume every fixture is a plain disc hanging at eight feet. Four corrections matter more than the arithmetic itself, and no calculator I've found asks for them.

  • Measure the widest tier, not the nominal size. Seus Lighting's guidance is to apply the width formulas to the widest tier of a multi-tier chandelier — a piece sold at one nominal size may spread wider at its lowest ring.
  • Size dense fixtures down, open frames up. Visual Comfort makes the point that two chandeliers of identical measured diameter can occupy very different amounts of visual space depending on how ornate the design is, so a drum shade or a packed crystal raindrop belongs at the bottom of your calculated range and a bare metal ring at the top.
  • Dark finishes read smaller. Seus Lighting advises sizing up slightly for bronze, black or oil-rubbed pieces, because dark finishes read smaller than gold or white.
  • Add 2–3 inches of diameter per foot of ceiling above 8 feet. That's Seus Lighting's figure. At 11 feet that works out to six to nine inches on top of whatever the width rule gave you.

The round-table exception is where the sources genuinely split. MOD Lighting extends the upper bound to three-quarters of the table width for round tables specifically; Seus Lighting keeps round and square at half to two-thirds with no such allowance.

My rule, offered as preference rather than sourced guidance: take three-quarters only if the table is large and the fixture is an open frame. No source in this set explains where the three-quarters upper bound comes from or gives a threshold table size for applying it.

Six fixtures against the same criteria

Six fixtures, one set of criteria: measured width, form matched to table shape, where the number lands in the published range, and visual weight. That last one is the criterion no ranking page applies, and it's the one that decides between two fixtures with identical diameters. I haven't hung any of them.

The visual-weight adjustment

Two fixtures measuring 47 inches across do not occupy the same amount of a room. A drum shade or a dense crystal cascade reads as solid mass; an open metal frame reads as air with an outline around it. So when Seus Lighting gives a 60-inch table a range of 30 to 40 inches, I'd put a crystal or shaded fixture at 30 and an open frame at 40, on the reasoning that an open frame occupies less visual space at the same diameter. Same range. Opposite ends.

Where each one lands

ORANOOR — Best for long tables

  • 39in linear body with two rings and two globes covers the length of a rectangular table rather than a single centre point
  • 3000-6000K colour temperature and 10-100% brightness via remote, app or the regular wall switch
  • But: Integrated LED strip cannot be re-lamped when it fails
  • But: Listing voltage is contradictory — specs say 220 volts while the bullet states 110V

Lynnoland 25"-61" — Best for standard tables

  • Adjustable from 25.2 in. to 61.2 in., covering both 8 ft and vaulted ceilings
  • 25 in. width and depth is proportioned for a 30×60 in. table seating four to six
  • But: Bulbs are not included, and six of them are needed before it lights at all
  • But: Dimming requires both dimmable bulbs and a separate dimmer switch, neither supplied

CRYSTOP — Best for low ceilings

  • D8in x H7.3in flush mount clears headroom entirely over a compact table
  • Weighs 1.44 pounds, undemanding on the ceiling box
  • But: 8in diameter is far too small to balance any full-size dining table
  • But: Bulbs not included

YUYI 71" — Best for large rooms

Which one for your table

Back to that 13 x 15 ft room with the 48-inch round table. Seus Lighting's chart puts a 48-inch table at 24 to 32 inches of fixture, and the room formula argues for 28. Take the lower end of the 24-to-32-inch band and the table wins the argument, if you follow Seus Lighting's smaller-result tie-breaker.

For a 60-inch table, Seus Lighting's chart gives a 30 to 40 inch band, with linear forms allowed up to 48 inches.

Long rectangular table, ordinary ceiling: Seus Lighting recommends a linear or rectangular fixture that mirrors the table's proportions, since a round fixture over a long table leaves the ends dim, and allows a 48-inch table a linear form up to 36 inches.

Banquet-length tables over 96 inches, per Seus Lighting, often look best with two coordinated fixtures spaced along the length. For a 36-inch round nook, the same chart gives 18 to 24 inches.

This is all published sizing guidance, compared chart against chart. That tells you proportion. It doesn't tell you how the crystal looks at 6 pm in February.

For a 48-inch table, Seus Lighting and Visual Comfort give 24 to 32 inches using half to two-thirds of the table width, while Maxim Lighting's three-quarters rule allows up to 36 inches. Stay in the 24-to-32 range in tighter rooms with lower ceilings; go to 36 only with height and width to spare.

Why do chandelier size calculators give me different answers?

Because manufacturers use different fractions of table width — half to two-thirds versus half to three-quarters — and read the room formula differently. Kichler treats width plus length in inches as a minimum diameter; Visual Comfort calls the same number the ideal. The bottom of every range agrees, but the top does not.

Should I size the chandelier to the room or to the table?
