That gap between two reputable sources is the whole problem with dining table pad size on an extension table: nobody agrees on the tolerance, and the number you calculate from a spec sheet will not match the number your tape gives you.

A 72-inch closed table with two 18-inch leaves ought to open to 108 inches on paper, but the leaf joints don't necessarily close to zero, so a measured figure may not match the calculated one. • Width at the widest point, which on most rectangular tables doesn't change with leaves but should still be checked.

• The arithmetic difference between your summed spec figure and your tape reading. Write it down.

Use a retractable metal tape, at least 10 feet. Affordable Table Pads warns that cloth tapes stretch and can be off by a full inch — enough to make every number above useless.

Where the pad seams land relative to the leaf joints

It is worth thinking about where the pad's section breaks fall relative to the leaf joints in the wood, since a pad seam sitting on a table seam offers a route for anything that gets past the cloth. No source, however, gives a rule for seam placement or an offset distance, and no manufacturer page states whether fold placement can be specified.

A Houzz poster who bought custom pads for a 54" x 162" table reported that large spills soaked through the tablecloth and seeped between the pad sections, and that they now lay a plastic tablecloth over the pads. Their set came as eight pieces — six leaf pads plus two half-circle end pads. No manufacturer source addresses whether pads seal or overlap at their section joints.

Seat the leaves properly before measuring. Table Pads Direct says it splits pads for tables 60" and over into sections or tri-folds at its own discretion, and gives no dimensions for where folds land. It is worth asking where the folds fall, though no source states whether a buyer can specify fold placement.

Mismatched leaves, round-to-oval tops, and other things that break the instructions

Measure every leaf on its own.

Not the table plus "however many inches of leaf" — each leaf, separately, across its flat surface. No source documents how often refinished or replacement leaves differ in width from the original top, or how to measure a table whose leaves differ from the main top.

Table Pads Direct tells buyers to measure only the top flat portion, excluding side moldings and beveled edges, because pads can only be made flat. Write the edge profile down too — a bevel changes where the pad's edge actually lands.

The round-to-oval problem

Take two diameter readings on a round top, at ninety degrees to each other. Affordable Table Pads' rule is blunt: if the two differ by more than half an inch, you don't have a round table, you have an oval. Then measure the leaf width separately. Tangers advises recording overall length and width for ovals and confirming whether the ends are true semicircles or a softer elongated oval.

For anything you can't describe in words, a bird's-eye photo with the tape visible beats a written note. Some makers will mail a template kit and let you trace the thing.

Published specifications, compared

What follows is drawn from vendor catalogs and maker copy, not from a bench test, and no source gives any dimensional standard or industry specification for table pads.

On length, the published ranges vary by vendor. Premier Table Linens stocks sizes from 24" round to 95" round and rectangles from 24" x 48" to 60" x 280". Table Pads Direct classifies pads up to 30" wide by 75" long as buffet, server or cocktail pads, and prices anything larger as a dining table pad.

On trimming, Premier Table Linens tells buyers: order the next size up and trim after delivery. Affordable Table Pads takes the other line for round tables, advising you round up to the nearest standard size — 42", 48", 54", 60" — and accept the coverage. The two lines contradict each other, and no source states which pad constructions can safely be trimmed by a buyer. Premier's own fabric is only 54 inches wide, so anything wider than that arrives with side panels.

Heat claims are hard to compare. Table Pads Direct rates its 1/2-inch pads to 550 degrees, and Tangers reports that many custom pads offer heat protection up to 550°F, with one product example rated to 600 degrees. Affordable Table Pads warns that some pads fail at 200°F. None of these ratings comes with a stated test method, duration or measurement condition, so they cannot be compared across vendors.

How much overhang gets a pad knocked off — and how much shortfall you live with

No source states how much smaller or larger than the tabletop a pad should be cut, or what fit error results from a given deviation — VMAT says only to decide whether the topper sits flush to the edge or slightly inset. Premier Table Linens notes that some customers deliberately let a pad drape about 6 inches and use it bare, without a cloth, though that is a different use from a fitted pad. Affordable Table Pads warns that folding creates permanent creases that trap moisture and turn into tear points, recommending flat or loosely rolled instead. No source explains which materials tolerate folding, or how storage bags sized for four sections square with a no-folding rule. One Houzz poster made a separate pad for each leaf configuration — none, one, or two leaves — and stored them rolled on a cardboard bolt under a bed.

So: write down your measured full extension and check it against the storage space you have before you order anything. Custom pieces are cut to order and cannot be adjusted after production, so verify the measurements first.
