The 62x80 problem: what to do when your arithmetic lands between stock sizes

You measure a 42 by 60 inch table, decide you want a 10-inch drop, and the arithmetic hands you 62 by 80. Nobody sells that. The rule I use (my own, not something any of the sizing guides publish): when the size you computed sits between stock sizes, round up if the gap is 4 inches or less per side, and round down only if the shortfall is under 2 inches per side. A short drop reads as a mistake. A long one reads as a decision.

That asymmetry is the whole point. Two inches of extra fabric hangs; two inches missing exposes the table edge and looks like you bought the wrong thing. Premier Table Linens' calculator makes the same worked example plain: 42 by 60 with an 8-inch drop wants 58 by 76, and the same table with a 10-inch drop wants 62 by 80. A two-inch change in drop moves each dimension by four.

So here is what's at stake for anyone buying this week: your table almost certainly does not have a matching stock size, and the charts stop exactly where your problem starts. What follows lets you pick a stock size anyway, and know which inch you're giving up.

The four near-misses I hit most often

• 58 x 76 computed (42x60 top, 8" drop): buy 60 x 84. You gain an inch of drop per side on the width and four on the length. Fine.
• 62 x 80 computed (42x60 top, 10" drop): buy 60 x 84. You lose one inch of drop per side across the width. Barely visible.
• 66 x 84 computed (36x60 top, 15" drop): buy 60 x 84 and accept 12 inches at the sides.
• 90 x 150 computed (30x96 banquet, floor drop): buy 90 x 156 and let six inches pool.

The one case where rounding down fails outright is a 4-inch shortfall or worse. Then you're in custom territory. Premier's A.C.T.S. programme exists precisely because the size your arithmetic produced doesn't get manufactured.

Drop above 15 inches lands in laps

No source connects drop length to chair-seat or chair-arm height, so the lap-clearance arithmetic here is mine rather than anyone's published figure: on a 30-inch table the gap between a seated diner's thighs and the underside of the table is on the order of a foot, less if the table has an apron, which suggests a 15-inch drop will not hang clear of seated diners.

That arithmetic is why the standard advice contradicts itself. Lenox calls 6 to 8 inches casual and 15 inches or floor length formal. Consumer Textile Corporation gives a similar split: 15 inches ideal for formal dining, 6 to 10 for casual. MagicLinen recommends 15 inches for formal dinner parties and professional events. Premier Table Linens, meanwhile, treats anything from 6 to 12 inches as standard, which is a much wider net.

Then there's 5 Family Ranch, which calls a 15-inch drop on a 60-inch round table a short drop with a casual look. Same number, opposite verdict.

The people who actually host tend to land lower. Designer Mina Lisanin puts casual at six to eight inches and formal at 10 to 15. Content creator Arlyn Hernandez is blunter about the failure mode: feet get tangled in an over-long cloth, and a 10-inch drop avoids that while still looking deliberate.

Here's a split nobody states outright, and which no source confirms: it may be that fifteen inches works on a buffet, a sideboard, a banquet table nobody sits at closely, and is a nuisance where eight people eat for two hours. What the sources do establish is that the charts never say whether they are optimising for formality or for seated comfort.

Height and shape corrections the charts leave out

Julia Amory's guide states plainly that all its sizing recommendations assume a 30-inch table height, and Love Tablecloths notes that standard table height is usually 29–30 inches (73.5–76cm), which is what drop-to-floor math assumes. Consumer Textile Corporation and BBJ La Tavola both put a 120-inch round at floor length on a 60-inch table, a figure that only holds at that assumed height.

Floor-length means the drop equals the table's height, so the number moves with the table: at the standard 29–30 inch dining height that is a 29–30 inch drop, and at the 42-inch cocktail height quoted by Premier Table Linens it is a 41–42 inch drop. No source in these pages publishes counter-height figures.

Run the round-table arithmetic, diameter plus twice the drop, which Lenox states as the formula, and Consumer Textile Corporation and BBJ La Tavola both put the 120-inch cloth at floor length on a 60-inch top. BBJ La Tavola's floor-length chart agrees: 108 inches for a 48-inch table, 132 inches for a 72-inch. Love Tablecloths goes further and gives 130 inches on a 72-inch round, a 29-inch drop with about an inch of clearance.

BBJ La Tavola specifies a 120-inch round for a 30-inch round highboy, puddling 3 inches on the floor. Those extra three inches, the same source says, are a deliberate puddle. Premier Table Linens treats puddle and just-above-floor as two separately sized choices, which is the more honest framing if you're renting and can't see the linen first.

Square cloth on a round table: the corners

No source in these pages says how far the corner points of a square cover hang on a round table, or whether they touch the floor. That's the number a buyer actually needs. 5 Family Ranch describes the effect only in aesthetic terms: a 72" x 72" square gives a mid-length drop with dramatic corner points, and a 90" x 90" a longer drape.

It cuts the other way too. A stock round on a square table scallops: BBJ La Tavola notes a 108-inch round on a 48-inch square touches the floor only at the centre of each side.

Narrow it down

• SASTYBALE, not for you if this matters: stated size deviation of 1 to 2 inches, which shifts drop length on each side.
• Lann's Linens, not for you if this matters: white shows every spill and needs laundering after each event.
• Bluetable, not for you if this matters: 54 in. width gives only a short drop on a 30 in. wide table — legs stay visible.

Two things the charts never address

Shrinkage is the first. None of these pages mentions laundering at all: whether to buy up a size because a natural-fibre cloth will shrink, and by how much, goes unstated everywhere. What the sources do offer is a fabric recommendation rather than a dimensional one. Lisanin, quoted in House Beautiful, recommends cotton-polyester blends for everyday durability and linen or velvet for formal dinners.

The second is height. Love Tablecloths gives the standard table height as 29 to 30 inches, or 73.5 to 76 cm, and that is the figure all the drop-to-floor arithmetic rests on.

Auditing the cloths you already own: six checks

Run the formula backwards on what's in your linen drawer before you buy anything else. Measure the cloth, subtract the table, halve the difference: that's your drop on each side. On a rectangular table you do it twice, once for width and once for length, because the two answers won't match. 5 Family Ranch shows this plainly: a 60" x 120" cover on a 29" x 96" banquet table gives 15" at the sides but only 12" at the ends.

Six checks, in the order I'd do them:

• Measure the cloth flat, not the label. No sizing guide here addresses shrinkage or how closely a finished piece matches its printed size, so treat the label as a starting figure and check it yourself.
• Measure the table with the leaves in. Lenox lists forgetting extensions as the first common sizing mistake, and a table that grows with a leaf in loses drop at each end.
• Run the numbers for both dimensions. On a rectangular table the side and end drops differ, and only doing the subtraction twice tells you by how much.
• Check a 6 ft banquet table twice. Love Tablecloths gives a 70" x 108" cover on a standard 6 ft trestle table (about 30" x 72") as roughly a 20" side drop and an 18" end drop.
• Confirm the table before ordering. BBJ La Tavola tells buyers to check actual table dimensions with the table supplier first.
• 52 x 52 on a 36" square gives 8" per side. Love Tablecloths puts the remaining floor clearance at roughly 22 inches, which reads as a café cover, not a dinner one.

Write the results on a slip of paper and keep it with the linens. Doing that once saved me two returns.

The one size that covers a banquet table properly

5 Family Ranch says a 90" x 156" cloth reaches the floor on all sides of a 29" x 96" banquet table. BBJ La Tavola adds the detail nobody quotes: on a 72" x 30" six-foot table the same size has to be tucked under at the narrow ends, and on a 60" x 30" five-foot table the 90" x 132" likewise needs tucking. That's a compromise, not a drape, though no source says how much tuck is acceptable before it looks wrong.

Back to the table you're actually covering

That 42 by 60 table with the 62 by 80 arithmetic? Premier Table Linens' A.C.T.S. (Any Custom Tablecloth Size) programme prices any size outside the standard chart, which is the vendor-side answer when nothing on the shelf matches.

For a floor-length look, 5 Family Ranch's 90" x 156" on a 29" x 96" banquet table is the sourced example. Lenox calls 15 inches or floor length formal; designer Mina Lisanin puts formal drops at 10 to 15 inches, which is not quite the same claim.

Built on published specifications and vendor charts, not measurement. Nobody in this piece washed anything. What I'd watch: whether the stated deviation holds after the first wash.
